Speed post tracking is done on the official India Post website or the India Post Dak Sewa app, using the speed post tracking no. printed on your booking receipt. The same steps work for any post office tracking, whether you call it Indian speed post tracking, India Post track or post office track. Please note that pincodeoffice.com is an independent pincode directory. This site cannot track parcels, cannot see delivery records and cannot contact India Post for you. This guide shows you how to track speed post, registered post and parcels yourself on India Post's own channels, what each status means and what to do if an item is late or lost.
How to track speed post on the India Post website
The quickest way to track India Post articles is the official website. Indian post office tracking on the official site is free. It works for Speed Post, registered articles, parcels and international items booked in India.
- Find the tracking number on your booking receipt. It is also called the article number or consignment number.
- Open the official site at www.indiapost.gov.in on your phone or computer.
- Look for the tracking option on the home page. It may be labelled track and trace or track consignment.
- Type the full number in capital letters with no spaces, for example in the pattern shown in the next section.
- Fill in the captcha if one is shown and submit.
- Read the list of events. Each line shows a date, a time, the post office or sorting hub and what happened there.
Only use the official India Post website or app for tracking. Many websites copy India Post data or show ads. Some ask for your phone number or payment. India Post does not charge you to check the status of an article.
India Post track consignment on the Dak Sewa app
India Post has a customer app called Dak Sewa. You can find it on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. Check that the publisher is India Post before you install it. In the app you can:
- Enter an article number or money order number to see its tracking status.
- File a complaint and follow its progress.
- Find the nearest post office and look up pincode details.
- Book Speed Post and parcels and ask for a pickup from home.
The app works in many Indian languages. You can change the language from the home screen.
Speed post tracking number format
India Post follows an international numbering standard set by the Universal Postal Union. A domestic or international India Post tracking number has 13 characters:
| Part | Length | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| First 2 letters | 2 letters | The type of service |
| Next 8 digits | 8 digits | The serial number of your item |
| Next 1 digit | 1 digit | A check digit that catches typing mistakes |
| Last 2 letters | 2 letters | The country code, which is IN for India |
So a speed post tracking number looks like this pattern: EE123456789IN. This example is made up and will not show any result. Use the number on your own receipt.
The first letter gives a rough idea of the service. Speed Post numbers usually start with E. Registered articles usually start with R. Parcels often start with C. Treat this only as a general guide, because the letters are set by India Post.
Because of the check digit, one wrong digit usually gives a "no record found" message. If that happens, check the number again, letter by letter.
Registered post and parcel tracking
India Post has merged the handling of registered post with Speed Post. Registration is now offered as an add-on to a Speed Post article, so the item goes only to the named addressee. You track it in the same way, with the same 13 character number on the receipt.
India Post parcel tracking also works the same way. Enter the parcel number on the website or app. International Speed Post is known as EMS. For EMS speed post tracking and other items sent abroad, India Post tracking shows the journey until the item leaves India. After that, the postal service of the other country may show more events under the same number.
If you are waiting for a passport, the passport office usually shares the Speed Post number when it sends the passport. Check the SMS you receive or your application status on the official Passport Seva website, then track the number on India Post.
Speed post tracking status: what each status means
The exact words can change a little, but these are the common status messages you will see.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Item Booked | The post office has accepted your item and entered it in the system. |
| Item Bagged | The item has been put in a mail bag with other items going the same way. |
| Item Dispatched | The bag has left one office or hub for the next one. |
| Item Received | The item has reached a sorting hub or the delivery post office. |
| Out for Delivery | The postman has taken the item to deliver it today. |
| Item Delivered | The item has been handed over at the address. |
| Addressee not available, door locked or similar | The postman tried to deliver but could not. The item is usually kept at the delivery post office for some time or tried again. |
| Item Onhold | The item is waiting at an office, often for a delivery attempt, a document or a customs check. |
| Item Returned | The item is going back to the sender, for example because the address was wrong or the item was not collected. |
Tracking updates when an item is scanned, so there can be gaps of a day or more between events, especially on long routes, Sundays and holidays.
What to do if your speed post is delayed
- Check the last event. Note the date and the office name. This tells you where the item was last seen.
- Check the address and pincode. A wrong pincode is a common reason for delay. You can confirm the correct pincode on our pincode pages or read how to write an address.
- Contact the delivery post office. If the item shows "Item Received" at a post office for some days, visit or call that office with the tracking number. You can see which post offices serve an area on our pincode and district pages, such as Mumbai or Delhi.
- Call India Post customer care. The toll free number listed on the official India Post contact page is 1800 266 6868. As per that page, agents are available from 8 AM to 8 PM, and the automated phone service works all day, including Sundays, except on gazetted holidays.
- Raise a complaint if there is still no movement. The steps are below.
What to do if a parcel is lost or damaged
- Keep the original booking receipt safe. You will need the tracking number and booking date.
- If the item arrives damaged, tell the postman or the post office at the time of delivery if you can, and take photos.
- File a complaint through an official channel and keep the complaint number.
- Ask the post office about the rules for compensation. These depend on the service, any insurance taken and the rules in force at the time, so check them at your post office or on the India Post website rather than relying on other sites.
How to complain to India Post through official channels
Use only these official routes. Do not share your details with people on social media who claim to be India Post agents.
- Online: the India Post customer complaint portal. Choose the right category, add the tracking number and save the complaint number you get.
- App: the Dak Sewa app lets you file a complaint and check its status.
- Phone: India Post customer care toll free number 1800 266 6868.
- In person: the Postmaster of the booking or delivery post office, or the Senior Superintendent or Superintendent of Post Offices for that area.
- Escalation: if the first level does not solve it, the India Post contact page lists the next levels, including the office of the Chief Postmaster General of each postal circle.
For full and current details, go to www.indiapost.gov.in. India Post is the only body that can trace an item or settle a claim.
