Use this pincode to pincode distance calculator, also called a pin code distance calculator, to see how far apart two places are. Type any two 6-digit pin codes and you get the distance in km in a second.
How to check pin code to pin code distance
- Type the first pincode in From pincode. For example, 110001 for central New Delhi.
- Type the second pincode in To pincode. For example, 400001 for south Mumbai.
- Tap Find distance.
- You see the distance in km, the main post office of each pincode and its district. Tap either pincode to open its page.
How the pincode distance is worked out
Each pincode covers one or more post offices. The India Post directory gives a map location for most of them. We take the average location of the post offices in each pincode as its centre point.
The calculator then measures the straight-line distance between the two centre points. This is the shortest path over the earth's surface, often called "as the crow flies". It uses the standard great circle formula, so long distances across India are also measured correctly.
Straight-line distance vs road distance
The distance between pincode areas by road is always longer than the straight line. Roads bend around hills, rivers and towns. As a rough guide, road distance is usually 20 to 40 percent more than the straight-line figure. In hilly areas, or where a river has few bridges, the gap can be much bigger.
For a driving route, open a map app and enter both places. Use this tool when you want a quick, fair comparison between many pin codes, for example to see which of five shops is nearest to a customer.
Pincode distance examples
Here is what the calculator shows for a few well known pairs. These are straight-line figures, so the trip by road or rail will be longer.
| From | To | Straight-line distance |
|---|---|---|
| 110001 (New Delhi) | 400001 (Mumbai) | about 1,164 km |
| 560001 (Bengaluru) | 600001 (Chennai) | about 292 km |
| 400001 (Mumbai) | 411001 (Pune) | about 119 km |
| 380001 (Ahmedabad) | 400001 (Mumbai) | about 455 km |
| 700001 (Kolkata) | 800001 (Patna) | about 474 km |

Where pin code distance is useful
- Shipping and courier. Courier companies often charge by zone, and the zone depends on how far the delivery pincode is from the pickup pincode. A quick pin to pin code distance check helps you guess the zone before you book.
- Online sellers. Sort orders by distance from your warehouse pincode, or decide which areas get same day delivery.
- Job or school choice. Compare how far an office, college or hospital is from your home pincode.
- Service areas. Plumbers, tutors and repair shops can decide which pincodes fall within their range.
- Forms and claims. Some travel or transfer claims ask for the distance between two places. Use this as a first check, then follow the rule your office gives.
When the result may be off
- Large rural pincodes. A village pincode may cover many branch offices spread over a wide area. The centre point is an average, so a place at the edge can be a few km away from it.
- Missing map data. A few post offices have no map location in the directory. If both pincodes have none, the tool cannot work out the distance and will tell you so.
- Wrong pincode. If a pincode is not in the directory, check the number. You can search the area name on the home page to get the right one.
Tips for a better distance check
- Use the pincode of the exact locality, not the main city pincode. In a big city, two pincodes can be 20 km or more apart.
- For a village, use the pincode of its branch post office. Then compare the result with a map app if you need the road route.
- To compare many places, keep one pincode fixed in the From box and change only the To box.
Find the pincodes first
Do not know one of the pin codes? Use these:
- Pincode of my location shows your current pincode in one tap.
- Browse a city, such as Bengaluru, Chennai or Kolkata, to see all its pincodes.
- Read what is a pin code to learn what each digit means. Two pincodes that start with the same three digits are in the same sorting district, so they are usually close to each other.
