How pincodes work in brief

A PIN code is a 6-digit number used by India Post to sort and deliver mail. PIN stands for Postal Index Number. It was introduced on 15 August 1972.

The digits go from big area to small area:

  • The first digit is the postal zone. For example, 1 covers Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and nearby areas, and 6 covers Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
  • The second digit is the sub zone inside that region.
  • The first three digits together point to a sorting district.
  • The last three digits point to the delivery post office.

So every pincode in Delhi starts with 110, and every pincode in Lucknow starts with 226. One pincode often covers many post offices, because small branch offices in villages share the pincode of a bigger office nearby. Read our full guide on what a pin code is to see the table of all nine zones.

How to use the search

  1. If you know the pincode, type the six digits in the boxes at the top. You go straight to that pincode's page.
  2. If you know the area name, type it in the search box, like "Andheri East" or "Indiranagar". Pick the right match from the list. Many areas have offices with similar names, so check the district too.
  3. If you do not know where you are, tap "Find the pincode of my location". Allow location access when your browser asks. You will see the nearest post offices and their pincodes.
  4. If you want to browse, pick a state from the list, then a district, then the post office.

Tips for getting the right pincode

  • Two places can have the same name in different states. Always check the district and state shown next to the result.
  • A big city has dozens of pincodes. Use the pincode of your own locality, not the main city pincode.
  • If a parcel or form is going to a village, use the pincode of the post office that serves the village. The branch office page shows it.
  • If you are still unsure, ask your local postman or the nearest post office. They know the delivery area best.

Questions people ask

Is this the official India Post website?

No. pincodeoffice.com is an independent site. It uses the public pincode directory that India Post shares on data.gov.in. For official services, tracking and complaints, use indiapost.gov.in.

How many digits does an Indian pincode have?

Every pincode in India has 6 digits. The first digit shows the postal zone and the last three digits show the delivery post office.

How do I find the pincode of my area?

Type your area or post office name in the search box and pick the right district from the list. You can also tap the location button to see the post offices nearest to you.

Why does one pincode show many post offices?

Small branch offices usually share the pincode of the bigger office that serves them. So one pincode can cover a town office and several village branch offices around it.

Can two areas with the same name have different pincodes?

Yes. Many area names repeat across India. Always check the district and state before you use a pincode.
