India Post Payments Bank, or IPPB, which many people search for as India Post Payment Bank, is a payments bank that works through post offices, postmen and Gramin Dak Sevaks across India. It is fully owned by the Government of India and set up under the Department of Posts. This guide explains what India Post Payments Bank offers, how to open an account, how doorstep banking works, where to find the IFSC code and how to reach customer care. pincodeoffice.com is an independent site and is not linked to IPPB or India Post. For official details, use the IPPB official website.
What is India Post Payments Bank
IPPB was incorporated on 17 August 2016 as a 100% Government of India owned company under the Department of Posts, and received its payments bank licence from the Reserve Bank of India. It started with two pilot branches in Raipur and Ranchi on 30 January 2017. The Prime Minister launched it across the country on 1 September 2018.
The main aim of India Post Payments Bank is financial inclusion, which means bringing banking to everyone. It uses the large post office network and its postal staff to bring basic banking to people who live far from a bank branch, especially in villages.
A payments bank is different from a normal bank in some ways. It can take deposits and offer payments and money transfers, but it does not give loans. As per RBI rules, quoted on the IPPB website, you can hold a maximum of Rs. 2 lakh in your account at the end of the day.
India Post Payments Bank services

How to open an India Post Payments Bank account
- Choose how to open. Visit your nearest post office or IPPB access point, ask your postman or Gramin Dak Sevak to come to your home, or use the IPPB mobile banking app for a digital account.
- Keep your documents ready. For a basic account, IPPB asks for your Aadhaar number, mobile number, and PAN card or Form 60.
- Complete eKYC. Your identity is checked through Aadhaar. If you do not use eKYC, you need to give proof of identity and proof of address, such as a passport, driving licence, voter ID or PAN card.
- Get your account details. Once the account is open, you get your account number and customer details. IPPB says there is zero initial deposit needed to open an account.
- Set up the app. Download the IPPB mobile banking app to check your balance, send money and generate a RuPay virtual debit card, where available for your account.
India Post Payments Bank doorstep banking
Doorstep banking is the biggest strength of IPPB. A postman or Gramin Dak Sevak comes to your home with a small device and does the banking work there. As per the IPPB doorstep banking page:
- You can ask for account opening, cash deposit and withdrawal, money transfer, bill payments, PAN and nominee updates, account statements, AePS services and more.
- To book a visit, call 155299 or 033-22029000, or ask your postman, Gramin Dak Sevak or post office.
- You choose a date and a time slot. The service is given on a best effort basis, depending on staff available.
- IPPB says there are no charges for doorstep banking service until further notice. Since this can change, confirm when you book.
Some Aadhaar services at home, such as updating your mobile number in Aadhaar, carry a fee. Check the current fee with your postman or on the IPPB website.
India Post Payment Bank IFSC code
You need an IFSC code to receive money by NEFT, RTGS or IMPS from another bank. We could not confirm the India Post Payments Bank IFSC code on the official IPPB website, so we do not list it here. Many unofficial websites show IFSC codes for IPPB, and they do not always agree, so it is easy to pick the wrong one.
The same care applies if you are looking for a post office IFSC code, India Post IFSC code or India Post Bank IFSC code for a post office savings account. Get it from an official source. To get the correct IFSC code for your account:
- Open the IPPB mobile banking app and check your account details.
- Look at your account opening details or welcome letter.
- Ask at the post office where your account was opened.
- Call IPPB customer care on 155299.
Always use the code given by IPPB itself before you send or receive money.

India Post Payment Bank balance check and customer ID
For an India Post Payment Bank balance check, use the IPPB mobile banking app, ask your postman during a doorstep visit or call 155299. If your account is linked to Aadhaar, the AePS service at a post office can also show your balance. Your India Post Payment Bank customer ID is given when your account is opened. You can find it in the IPPB app or in your account opening details, or ask at your post office.
IPPB and post office savings schemes
IPPB is not the same as the Post Office Savings Bank. Post office schemes such as RD, time deposit, MIS, PPF and Sukanya Samriddhi are run by India Post at the post office. IPPB lets you link your post office savings account and pay into some post office products. To compare those schemes, see our post office schemes guide and the RD calculator. Check post office timings before you visit.
